The Intensive course, which has as its nucleus a ‘Lifeskills’ component comprising contemporary English usage for work, social and travel situations, takes place in the mornings and on four afternoons weekly (three afternoons weekly during July and August), excluding Public Holidays. Integral to the afternoon programme are specific options, such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and conversation, catering to the particular needs and preferences of students. A fully-integrated Business English course is also offered.

‘From my first day everyone at the school has been really welcoming and friendly. My teacher was amazing and the lessons were interesting and funny. I would also absolutely recommend the social activities and the karaoke evening was the best. The staff who organise the social activities are friendly and professional and always willing to listen to any problems you may have. My host family was amazing and I would recommend them to anybody. The final word is that I would love to come back and I have already recommended to my little brother. Thank you for everything’Julien From France, Intensive Course
‘On my first day everyone was so friendly that I felt happy and relaxed. The lessons and the teachers were very good and I wish I had more time and opportunity to study for longer here. The social activities were also very good and the staff were great. I am so happy my teacher in Belarus sent me to EIM. Thank you so much for this week and everything you did for me – You are fantastic, I’m so happy I had this experience and hope to come back again soon. Honestly I don’t want to leave’Alena From Belarus, Intensive Course
‘I really enjoyed the English courses in Margate. The high quality of teaching, the dynamism and the interactions during the class made the difference. The teacher was always attentive to every single student and their individual progression. The Hawley club was the perfect place to meet new people from all around the world and to relax during the break. I loved the social program and the different activities suggested, especially the tennis. Thank you!’Mouktar From Chad, Intensive Course
‘This school was a great choice for me. It was a lovely experience and everyone made me feel really welcome. The school is like a family and made me feel very much at home. The activities were well organised, with a lot of diversity. I really think my English skills have improved. The last word to say is Thankyou’Sira From Spain, Intensive Course
We are open from 8:45am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday and from 7:45pm to 9:45pm two or three evenings per week, except on National Holidays. During opening hours, students are welcome to use all the school facilities, which include the self-study area, the social club, the internet café and bar, and the table tennis room.
EiM is open from Wednesday 2 January to Friday 20 December, but will be closed on the following National Holidays: 19 and 22 April, 6 and 27 May, 26 August, and from 23 December to 3 January 2020. The first day back for students in 2020 is Monday 6 January.
On national holidays there are no classes. Students have the option of joining a teacher-led excursion (transport not included) instead of classes. Any missed individual classes will be taught on another day. When the national holiday is on a Monday, students arriving will have their induction on the Tuesday. However, the above does not apply to our Christmas Break (from 23 December to 3 January 2020), where no trips may be offered as the Centre will be fully closed.
On arrival, students receive a Welcome Pack as part of English in Margate’s Induction programme. This contains comprehensive information about the school as well as relevant details about the local area, including transport and recreational facilities. During the Induction, students are given both a written and oral test to determine their levels, followed by a tour of the school. After a mid-morning break, during which they have the chance to meet other students, they join classes at 11:30 (in summer this will be an introductory class).
After the first afternoon lesson, there is an orientation tour of Margate and an academic induction to our self-study facilities.
One of the key features of our Academic team is the degree of hands-on support offered to students from the moment they arrive until their departure. This is an ongoing process of communication with all students, including feedback questionnaires at various points during their stay. Students are also welcome to express their opinions to their classroom teacher, particularly if they have concerns over their placement and class level. In addition, fortnightly tests and a system of 1-to-1 tutorials enable us to assess and monitor the progress of all students, ensuring appropriate classroom provision.
For students who wish to add additional elements to their learning programme, our self-study centre, open weekdays from 8:45am to 9:30am, 11am to 11:30am, most of the day from 8:45am to 5:30pm and on two or three evenings from 7:45pm to 9:45pm, offers the ideal practice opportunity, with assistance from staff available whenever necessary.
With academic progress being so closely linked to a student’s personal circumstances, we have a strong system of pastoral care in place, based on care and confidentiality. During their stay, students can be sure of finding a sympathetic and helpful member of our Welfare team who will offer the appropriate advice and guidance, with the individual’s best interests in mind.
